Nuhhhhhhhh. Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I am completely sick of zombies. I have been for a few years now. I think the big wave of zombie films after Shaun Of The Dead just got diluted to the death, although, y’know, there was a time when it was still fresh and exciting. Around about the time I was in college, actually. Around about the time Colin got made.
Made on a budget of £45, Colin was written and directed by Marc Price. Set in London during a zombie apocalypse, where we meet Colin, played by Alastair Kirton. An ordinary looking guy, Colin is clearly distressed – and we quickly discover why. Bitten on the arm, we witness Colin make the painful transformation into one of the walking dead, before freeing himself of his home and setting out onto the streets.
With the echo of gunfire in the distance, we follow Colin as he shambles through the streets of London, pausing at reminders of his past. Around Colin, we witness the horrors of a zombie apocalypse. Never directly involved, Colin passes through most of the action, with the camera hanging back for his perspective, and, you know what – it really, really works.
There’s a real sadness behind Colin that really harks back to the classic Romero zombies. I genuinely haven’t felt for a zombie this much since Maggie – or maybe even Bub from Day Of The Dead. I feel like the film does sag in the middle, but I think that’s sort of the point. This isn’t a fun film, but the passion that went into making it really shines through. If you can find it, watch it.
