Hi, I’m Adam and this is Day 10 of my 31 Days Of Horror. Tonight, I thought, well, since I’m still feeling pretty poorly, this is an ideal time to discuss one of the more controversial of my selection this year – the dreaded 1990 miniseries, Stephen King’s IT.
Okay, I’m just going to be upfront and say it now. I don’t like IT. No, that’s not true – I like the idea, and the conceit, I just.. am I really the only one out there that finds this version just a bit.. lame? Yes, Tim Curry’s performance is incredible as Pennywise. Yes, some of the sequences are very memorable and scary but.. it’s a television movie. It’s cheap. It’s cheesy. And I’m fully prepared for you to hate me, but it just isn’t scary.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. IT takes place across two time periods in the town of Derry, Maine. Starting off in the 60s, a group of children are disturbed when Bill’s younger brother Georgie is attacked by a mysterious figure hidden inside a storm drain, and left to bleed to death in the road.
With concern growing over a supposed murderer in the area, Bill and his friends, Eddie, Ben, Richie, Stan and, later, Beverley and Mike, team up to work out what’s happening, and soon begin to unravel the truth. That an underground creature is planning to devour them all..
27 years later, and the group have all since left Derry with no memory of what happened. Mike, the only one to remain in the town, calls them all back again to finish what they started as children. One by one, they experience flashbacks and manage to piece together the source of evil – and how they might defeat Pennywise once and for all.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s a very interesting story. One that has deservedly had several adaptations over the years – and I’m very interested to see what the most recent version develops into. But, the classic, for what it’s worth, isn’t all that. Especially the scenes with the adults, man, talk about soap opera. I have had many arguments over this in the past, and I fully expect to have more in the future.
The 1990 IT film? It’s just okay. I don’t even know what Pennywise is doing for most of the film – because he certainly isn’t killing anyone – and, most damning of all, NO ONE FLOATS. WHAT A LIAR.
